Our Intentions

The committee is guided by principles that promote safety, healing, and cultural support.

The Métis 2SLGBTQQIA+ National committee aims to take responsibility for our roles in the community and acknowledge how we can contribute and support each other. We recognize the distinctive experiences of transgender and gender-diverse Métis kin and identify the cultural values that can help us return to the practices of inclusion that our ancestors valued. This includes fostering a culture of mutual respect and finding purpose in our lives as Métis Two-Spirit and LGBTQQIA+ kin.

Through our work, we create kinship within our communities and work together towards a common goal. We can build a stronger, more supportive community that empowers and celebrates our unique identities. There is a mutual benefit in working together as allies. We hold a sense of gratitude and respect for the opportunity to collaborate and support one another.

Our Intentions

The following intentions are held up by the National committee.
As Métis Two-Spirit people:

We must have the ability to declare whether we feel safe or welcome in a particular space

The goal is to make all places as safe as possible, but we recognize that not all locations are completely safe. Therefore, we use terms like “welcoming” and “brave” to describe safe spaces, and we carefully vet and select which places are culturally appropriate and safe for Indigenous kin.

We aim to bring Two-Spirit and Métis LGBTQQIA+ into their culture – it is vibrant, healthy, inclusive, and beautiful, and many people have not experienced it, especially in Western culture.

We aim to explore learning about roles of Two-Spirit and LGBTQQIA+ Métis community and their connection to the community before colonization.

We aim to create footsteps for generations to follow, for youth and seven generations to come.

We aim to provide gatherings, cultural, and affirming experiences, so that people who feel like they did not have access for gender-based and orientation-based violence resources can get the support they need. The creation of connections makes people feel that it is worthwhile being on the planet, and it can facilitate healing.

These gifts are part of our spiritual bundle. We aim to highlight and share about the medicines that we carry.

We aim to support access to ceremonial spaces for Métis 2SLGBTQQIA+ in our communities.
